WOW! Chainsaw Carving!

Please wait while these awesome photos's worth the wait~

I saw the most awesome thing today.....
Chain Saw Sculpture Bear
We are having the annual Bourne Scallop Festival here, and all of Main street was packed with vendors and people buying. We came across these wonderful wood carvings and I am just in AWE! Now, these beauties were not in the Scallop Festival tents, but further down Main Street.

These are all hand carved with a CHAIN SAW ~!

My boyfriend writes for the local newspaper, Cape Cod Today, and asked me if I would get some pictures, and boy, was I happy to do that. I learned so much!

These carvings are all done by Wayne Chain Saw Carving ManDeMoranville, who I would say is a master craftsman and can wield a chainsaw like nobody's business!

Here is a picture of Wayne, with his Banjo Bear, who he said is an older carving, but one that he keeps with him. He takes him to all the shows and fairs that he does. I can see why he is a favorite!

I would be very proud of Banjo Bear too, if I owned him.

Wayne's business is called Wayne
DeMoranville Artworks, and he works out of Lakeville, Mass.
Wayne DeMoranville
You can visit his website at:

He said that he has been wood carving for 9-10 years. That is a lot of sculpture to have done!
This is Wayne sitting on an absolutely gorgeous bench he created. It has 2 bears on the left side and and an eagle and bear with a honey pot and beehive on the right.

These pictures don't even come close to doing his art justice, but take my word for it, they are beautiful!
Artisians Gallery

Right now he is in the town of Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, and is working in a studio at the Artisans Gallery of Cape Cod on Main Street. He will be there for about a month he said.

There are many other artists here with many other kinds of work and Crafts to display.
You should check it out if you get the chance.

Bears Carving
This is one end of that bench from above, with the bears and the beehive. See the detail in the bear's fur? All done with the chainsaw!

You can see a bit of a rooster in the background too. All of his carvings are stunning!

Wayne also told me that he carves Totem Poles and ice sculptures!

I would love to see those!

Beaver carving
This is a sculpture of a beaver that Wayne did earlier today. One couple standing next to me said they saw him starting to carve it earlier, and were very impressed that when they walked back this way, it was completed! They were saying they couldn't believe that this came from a "chunk of wood".

You can also see a fish sculpture in the background of this shot, (and Wayne too!).

Eagle and Bear carving

This is the other side of that lovely bench, with the eagle on top of a branch holding a beehive, and the bear down below holding a honey pot. I can't believe he does all this will a chainsaw! Whew!

This would definately be a showpiece if you had this on your lawn.

This is a stunning carving of a fisherman with his latest catch.....

Just look at the detail.....even in the beard, and the fingers on his hand.

Again, I can't say enough how beautiful these are in person.

Carving the woodThis is a tree trunk before Wayne starts to carve.

He told me that this is going to be a "Cranberry Pickin' Bear" and that when he is finished, it will be auctioned off at his next show, which will be October 11th and 12th, 2008, at the Cranberry Harvest Celebration that is put on by A.D. Makepeace.

They are located in Wareham, Mass, and Wayne will be doing his carving shows and selling his sculptures.

Here is that stump of wood after he has been carving it with chainsaw for a few minutes. I more carvinghave to admit I was facinated and mesmerized by the sight of the wood chips flying, and the hum of the chainsaw, and couldn't for the life of me figure out how he was going to get a bear holding cranberries out of that wood! Watching him work is sort of like a guilty pleasure in that you are watching an expert craftsman in action, and also you are witnessing first hand a beautiful piece of art being created!

Now, here is the beginnings of the Cranberry Bear in the MakingPickin' Bear that I mentioned earlier. Wayne had been working about 15-30 minutes and this is what was accomplished in that time! It's definately looking like a bear to me!

If you want to see the finished masterpiece, you will have to go to the AD Makepeace Cranberry Harvest Celebration. I know I will!

I hope you enjoyed these photos, and you feel as impressed as I do. I still can't believe it.....a chainsaw!!!!!

Wow, that takes a lot of skill! My father is pretty handy when it comes to wood work too. He has built so many big projects over the year, right now he is doing a shed. :P

I saw a pretty young girl doing chainsaw carving at the Gatlinburg Art and Craft show last year. It was AMAZING! She was working on a bear. I can't imagine how strong you'd have to be!

Hi Kat,
Thanks for your comment on my blog about the accident. I really appreciated it. I am really glad you posted about the scallop fest.
We were going to go this year, but something came up. I now know what I missed and I will make sure we get there next year. What an artist to do those carvings. Thanks again,
Janet :)
